Background of the study
Language is a core component of political identity, serving as a marker of heritage and a tool for mobilization. In Tiv communities of Benue, the Tiv language is integral to expressing political identity and unity. Political leaders and community activists utilize Tiv not only as a medium of communication but also as a means to assert cultural pride and resistance against external influences (Ogbonna, 2023). Through speeches, community forums, and media broadcasts, the Tiv language reinforces collective memory and cultural narratives. However, modernization and external political pressures sometimes lead to a dilution of traditional linguistic forms, sparking debates about the future of Tiv identity. This study examines how language shapes political identity in Tiv communities by analyzing political speeches, conducting ethnographic research, and interviewing community leaders. It seeks to uncover the ways in which Tiv language use reinforces or challenges political boundaries and cultural continuity (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite its importance, the Tiv language is increasingly influenced by external political pressures, leading to shifts in language use that may undermine traditional political identity (Ogbonna, 2023). Inconsistencies in language application in political discourse can dilute cultural symbolism, affecting unity and representation within Tiv communities (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
- To explore how Tiv language influences political identity.
- To identify changes due to external pressures.
- To recommend measures for preserving traditional political discourse.
Research questions:
- How is Tiv language used to express political identity?
- What external factors influence language shifts?
- How can traditional language be maintained?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it reveals the critical relationship between language and political identity in Tiv communities. Findings will inform policymakers and cultural leaders, aiding efforts to preserve traditional linguistic forms in political discourse (Ogbonna, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Tiv communities in Benue; excludes other political or cultural regions.
